Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here you will find problems that occur regardless of the operating system. Problems that only affect a specific system are listed in the FAQ of the respective installation guide. If you cannot find a solution, please ask your tutors.

The compiler is not found even though it is installed

Problem: Visual Studio Code does not offer a compiler when you press the play button, or g++ is unknown in the terminal.

Solution: Check whether the compiler has been added to the path (see the installation guide for your system). After every change to the path, Visual Studio Code and all open terminals must be completely closed and restarted for the change to take effect.

The play button is missing

Problem: No play button is shown in the top right corner of Visual Studio Code.

Solution: Check whether

  • the C/C++ extension by Microsoft is installed (Extensions side bar),
  • the open file ends in .cpp, and
  • you have opened a folder in Visual Studio Code and not just a single file.

Spaces or special characters in the path

Problem: Compiling fails with confusing error messages even though the program is correct.

Solution: The path to your project folder should not contain spaces, umlauts (ä, ö, ü, ß) or other special characters. Create your projects e.g. in C:\InfIng\Projekte (Windows) or ~/InfIng/Projekte (Linux, macOS).

The program cannot read input

Problem: A program that reads input with std::cin does not react to keyboard input.

Solution: Click into the terminal window at the bottom of Visual Studio Code before typing your input. If that does not help, compile the program and run it directly in the terminal. On macOS, please also follow the instructions in the macOS guide.

No Wi-Fi access

Problem: The laptop does not connect to the eduroam Wi-Fi.

Solution: Instructions for setting up eduroam can be found on the pages of the TUHH computing center. If possible, set up eduroam before the day of the course.

I only have a tablet or smartphone

Problem: Neither a compiler nor Visual Studio Code can be installed on iOS and Android devices.

Solution: Use the TUHH pool computers (Windows pool, Linux pool) and talk to your tutors.
